06 Apr Fight Disease, Get Healthier By Pairing The Wim Hof Method & Nutrition
Did you know that you may not be getting enough oxygen? Which is crazy because the single greatest element that you require as a human is oxygen! You can go for days without food and water, but just try to hold your breath and you immediately see how critical oxygen is.
You may be slowly choking your own cells of this precious oxygen and you don’t even know it!
I have been all around the world hunting superfoods, formulating special herbal supplements and learning about natural ways to stay healthy and optimally fit. When I wrote SuperLife: The Five Forces That Will Make You Healthy, Fit, and Eternally Awesome, one of the life forces I talked about was oxygenation and how important it is to your overall health. But most of us are not getting enough of it unless we learn how to get more consciously.
I have been learning about oxygen for years, but when my fellow workout buddies Laird Hamilton and Brian Mackenzie (founders of XPTLife.com along with Gabby Reece) told me about what Wim was doing with the Wim Hof Method and I began doing the breathing techniques, I quickly realized this was the best way I had discovered so far to better uptake oxygen and create an oxygen-rich environment in the body.
I was hooked! Not to mention I appreciated the huge inner peace, balance, and new levels of awareness Wim’s work also takes you to. In addition to getting all the oxygenation benefits from the breathing I also fell into the deepest meditation, receiving all of the health benefits that meditation provides at the same time!

Since I had previously studied and looked into oxygen and the body’s ability to both use and better utilize it, I knew that food, herbs, and water/hydration were intimately connected to the body’s ability to handle even higher states of oxygen utilization.
When pairing a more alkaline-rich diet along with enhanced breathing such as Wim’s method, your body can be supercharged to increase performance and recovery as well as be an immune-boosting and disease-fighting machine!
After spending time with Wim, using his method and applying several of the life forces I have been working on, I knew it would be a no-brainer to do some work together and share this combined knowledge of breathing and nutrition.
Your body better resists disease, you get healthier, and you perform better when pairing improved oxygen intake and supportive nutrition.
The best way to increase your body’s amount of oxygen uptake is by doing conscious, deep breathing. That is it: good, old-fashioned deep breathing! There are many different mechanical ways people try to get more oxygen including using hyperbaric oxygen tanks or simply putting on an oxygen mask. These are all fine but there is nothing more beneficial than learning to breathe deeply in a conscious way so you train your body through the proper stress mechanisms to increase the efficiency of its oxygen metabolism.
This is so much better long term compared to just breathing in manufactured oxygen.
If your body is trained to take in more oxygen from the environment and simultaneously taught to utilize more through the proper stressors (many of which are found in Wim’s program) you will be creating a foundation of health that could never be artificially created any other way.

From there the next step is to create an environment for your body to better receive and use more oxygen. That’s where linking better breathing with nutrition comes into play.
Nutrition plays a big role in preparing your body to better receive and utilize the oxygen coming in through the lungs because eating fresh, whole foods keeps your body at a slightly alkaline state. Neutral pH in your body is 7, while anything above 7 is alkaline and below 7 is acidic.
(Please note, I am not talking the pH of the blood since the body must keep that in a very tight window, between 7.35 and 7.45, in order for the heart to pump and vital organs to work.)
Instead what I am referring to is the overall alkalinity of your body, which can be influenced by food choices. (Psychological and emotional stress effects pH as well, but that is a topic for another conversation.) In a slightly alkaline state your body has the ability to receive, handle, and hold more oxygen.
Alkalinity and oxygen are intimately connected, and can be effected by the food you eat.
Here’s how: All food is metabolized by the body, burned in a similar fashion of a little cellular furnace for energy. Think about the little pile of ash that is left when you burn a piece of paper. Something similar happens in your body; there is always an “ash” that is left over and the type of ash changes depending on the type of food.
While there is usually an acidic ash from processed foods and meat and dairy, there is actually a more alkaline ash from whole foods such as fresh veggies, fruits, and many nuts and seeds. Here is my list of acidic and alkaline sources for your body.
Don’t overreact and think that you can only ever eat alkaline foods. Your body does need some acidic foods. It is when you eat too many of them over and over and don’t have a balance of alkaline, fresh, mineral-rich, whole foods that you eventually create an acidic condition in the body. And in that condition, your body cannot receive or hold much oxygen. You are creating a state for disease to flourish.
Everything is connected in your body, especially to create an environment for your body to have energy, fight disease, be pain free, and simply feel great. If you are doing all the breathing with the Wim Hof Method, then it makes sense to also be aware of what you are eating. Combining the two doubles the impact of your efforts.
You want an oxygen-rich environment inside your body for long-term health!
The great work by Dr. Otto Warburg in the early 1900s and since then has shown that no disease, bacteria, or virus can survive in an oxygen-rich environment. This creates more potential in your body to fight disease, create longevity, have energy, fight inflammation, and so on.
OXYGEN AND NUTRITION MATTER
Breathing better and eating the right alkaline-rich foods are worth it! Increased oxygen in the body supports more than 200 years of research that no disease or harmful bacteria can survive in an oxygen-rich environment!
The more you know about oxygen, the more you realize that Sheldon Saul Hendler was right when he said,
“Breathing is unquestionably the single most important thing you do in your life.
And breathing right is the single most important thing you can do to improve your life.”

Posted at 12:24h, 23 FebruaryI suffer with a chronic illness and recently did Anne Pitman’s breathing course which seems to do the complete opposite of what Wim is suggesting? You can see details of Anne’s work here: https://goo.gl/HFj6gR
Anne seems to be all about less oxygen, more co2 and getting the body less alkaline? Otherwise she argues that body is stuck in a state of chronic hyperventilation.
Interested to know your thoughts on the two different approaches.
Is it that Anne is actually referring to the PH of blood where as Wim is only referring to the PH of the body’s environment?
