08 Jun How to Eat Healthy While Traveling
I get asked a lot about what to eat and what not to eat. Eating healthy takes on a whole new dimension with travel. It’s easy to load up on the food that is easily accessible, but this hurts your body – leading to potential weight gain, sluggishness, and disease.
Your body knows the difference between fresh, whole foods and processed food that doesn’t expire for years.
However, once you begin to listen to yourself and trust that you already know what the body requires, the challenge becomes finding foods that are both accessible and practical. Away from the comfort of your home kitchen, which you have filled with delicious, healthy ingredients and treats, you may sometimes find yourself with limited options. Finding healthy foods to eat while traveling takes preparation, but it is absolutely worth it.
My saving grace while traveling is packing a laptop-sized case with a variety of food products that transport easily and do not spoil.
Note: Whatever you do, do NOT leave yourself at the mercy of airplane meals or roadside food services.
Foods To Pack So You Can Eat Healthy While Traveling:
Handmade individual trail mixes are the best! You can custom make trail mix blends based on what nutrients your body needs.
Pre-packaged trail mixes (choose clean, whole organic ingredients). One brand I LOVE is Bliss Mix. It’s full of mouth-watering organic goji berries, organic Himalayan golden raisins, organic mulberries, organic pistachios, organic cashews, macadamia nuts and organic cacao nibs.
Nuts
Dried Fruits
Shakeology (vegan protein powder)
Greens powder – I use Alkalinize from the Ultimate Reset
Enzymes – I use Optimize from the Ultimate Reset
Stabilized liquid oxygen – Check out bio2usa.com
Himalayan salts to add to filtered water
Water filter that can be hooked up to a faucet (filters can be found in camping stores.)
Raw food bars or good nutritious bars with clean ingredients
Probiotics – I use Revitalize from the Ultimate Reset
Fruit – Bananas, oranges, nectarines, and fruits that have an outer layer that protects the inner food. Bananas’ outer layer of skin naturally protects the fruit and makes it less likely to be contaminated by germs and dust. This is an outstanding benefit while traveling.
Additional Tips:
In addition to packing ahead, treating yourself to a filling meal, whether at home or at an eatery you visit frequently, is a good first intentional step to staying full for the first leg of your travels. I often pick up a veggie burrito in town before heading to the airport. This satisfies my hunger before a long plane trip. You can also pack a salad to eat on the plane, minus any high-liquid dressing (so you can take it through security).
If possible, look for a healthy, conscious salad at mealtimes while on the road. If your options are even too limited to find salads, a trail mix can also be satisfying. Trail mixes vary greatly, so be sure that you bring mixes from home or choose packaged mixes from companies you recognize and trust. Adopting products depending on where your location is sometimes possible, but you should not rely primarily on finding your ingredients wherever you travel.
Drink plenty of clean water while traveling. Your body needs the additional fluids to stay hydrated and properly digest the foods you are eating.
Even with all of these preparations, eating healthy on the road while traveling can be difficult. Regardless of the challenges one faces in the search for healthy foods outside of the home, do not be discouraged. There certainly are a number of products that can carry you through your travels, back to the abundance of your own kitchen!
The Short Version:
Planning ahead and packing portable healthy foods are the keys to successful healthy eating when traveling.
