We’re led to believe that traditional medicine involves seeing a doctor in a white coat, most likely being prescribed some pills for whatever ails us and going home. But over the last hundred years, we’ve lost the true meaning of traditional medicine. In fact, naturopathic medicine encompasses more of the traditional aspects of health and wellness that our ancestors relied on.
WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW
Dr. Lana Butner is a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine. But what does that mean?
Due to a lifelong interest in health and fitness, Dr. Lana knew she’d always end up having a career in healthcare. However, it wasn’t until she visited a naturopathic doctor for her own health issues, that she truly knew what she wanted to do. As a naturopathic medical doctor, Dr. Butner uses naturopathic medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine to help her patients achieve optimal health.
Not only is Lana a board-certified naturopathic doctor (ND), but she is also a licensed acupuncturist (LAc). She earned her ND at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, a four-year accredited medical school. Her schooling involved hundreds of hours of both conventional and alternative medicine therapies including botanical medicine, nutrition and detox techniques. Dr. Butner earned her Master of Science in Acupuncture from the Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture and uses that regularly in her practice.
You guys know how I feel about the current state of our “healthcare” system.
And that’s the reason I wanted Dr. Lana on my show. Naturopathic doctors like her, in my opinion, offer a more complete look at the root cause of illness and health problems. Instead of prescribing pills, she looks at the total picture– nutrition, mental health and lifestyle. While this still includes running bloodwork and medical tests like traditional doctors, it also includes a lot of other essential checks that modern medicine overlooks.
Besides clearing up the mysteries of naturopathic medicine, Dr. Lana also got into some women’s health issues that I think are a very big deal in today’s world. We talked about the ridiculous “pink tax”, and ways that womens’ health concerns are often dismissed or overlooked. We dove into how chemicals in popular products can affect your hormones, and what methods she uses to get to the bottom of illnesses. If you’ve ever been curious about naturopathic medicine, but didn’t know where to begin, this is the episode for you.
