There are parts of us all that could use a little healing. But if you’re in a self-destructive cycle, harnessing the power of nature could be the medicine that saves you. Let’s talk plant medicine and psychedelics.
Welcome to the Darin Olien Show,
In this episode, we’re going well beyond the fringes of our perceived reality with a new buddy of mine, Carlos Tanner.
Carlos was living the ideal, all-American dream. He had a beautiful house, a nice car, the perfect job. What many people didn’t see though, was his deep dissatisfaction with life, and spiraling heroin addiction. It wasn’t until he had a near-death experience involving his car and the Manhan River, that his life took a dramatic turn.
Today, Carlos is the founder of the Ayahuasca Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Iquitos, Peru. This research center offers healing retreats and in-depth educational courses. They continuously strive to understand the plant-based healing practices used by indigenous healers of the Peruvian Amazon. For anyone who has tuned in to the “Down To Earth” series on Netflix, (hosted by the affable Zac Efron and yours truly), you’ll probably recognize Carlos from the last episode of the first season. We experienced some of his magical, plant-based healing practices first hand.
Carlos has participated in over 700 ayahuasca ceremonies. He regularly speaks about his experiences with Ayahuasca and his path to becoming a shaman.
In this episode, my eyes have truly been opened. Carlos tells us his insane back story, and how he landed his ultimate job working with one of the world’s most sacred medicinal plants. We dive into his trippy, yet visceral experience during his first Ayahuasca ceremony and the epic work the Ayahuasca Foundation is now doing for medicinal plant research and the planet.
In This Conversation:
- Where Carlos’ love of medicinal plants began
- What it was really like to have the “dream job.”
- The near-death experience that put Carlos on a different path
- The first Ayahuasca experience- from vomit to sombreros
- What is Ayahuasca?
- The hypersensitivity state and going beyond the five senses
- Creating the Ayahuasca Foundation.
- The surprising question Zac Efron asked at the retreat
- This week’s Fatal Convenience™: Social Media

Posted at 15:48h, 30 JulyI listened to the podcast today, very interesting.
Also the segment about social media.
When I eliminated all my social media accounts last year, my life became more amazing with a better connection with my family, freinds, work and life in general.
It is like social media was stealing and extracting all the good energy from the body and mind.
Connecting better to our vegetable garden, best garden in a long time; being well over 50 years I feel stronger and healthier in decades; my artwork is at its best and find more inspiration; everyday work as a Product Manager in the building industry has improved.
rethink how Social Media …., eliminate and reduce a lot ….. they is more to life

Posted at 18:13h, 10 AugustThis podcast was the “cherry on the top” on the last episode of Down to Earth’s.
I loved the idea to include the “connection/spirituality” element in the episode, after all, we are all one, we are all connected and as a very respected brain researcher stated:
“We are all spiritual beings having a human experience.”
When Carlos Tanner mentioned about the “sensitive plant”, took me instantly back to my childhood, back in my home country, Brazil. Playing outdoors; touching these plants and just observing life… It just tickled my heart! (*sigh*)
This is my favorite podcast so far!
