Yung Pueblo: Escaping the Poverty Trap, Hitting Rock Bottom, and Why Human Presence is the New Premium

What if the anxiety, fear, and emotional patterns you’ve carried your entire life aren’t actually who you are? What if the freedom you’ve been searching for comes from learning to understand your own mind?

In this deeply personal episode of the SuperLife Podcast, Darin Olien sits down with bestselling author and meditation teacher Yung Pueblo, also known as Diego Perez, to explore childhood trauma, emotional healing, meditation, and the liberating power of taking responsibility for your life.

Growing up as the son of Ecuadorian immigrants, Diego witnessed his parents struggle through poverty, financial insecurity, and relentless uncertainty. Without realizing it, he absorbed their anxiety and developed a scarcity mindset that followed him into adulthood. By his early twenties, those unresolved emotions had contributed to severe substance abuse and a terrifying rock-bottom experience that nearly cost him his life.

That moment became his turning point. Rather than continuing to escape his emotions, Diego decided to face them. He began rebuilding his physical health, changing destructive habits, and eventually discovered Vipassana meditation through an unexpected email from a college friend.

Today, Yung Pueblo has maintained a disciplined two-hour daily meditation practice since 2015 and recently completed an extraordinary 60-day silent retreat in India. He shares what prolonged stillness revealed about the ego, attachment, impermanence, and the emotional patterns that keep us trapped in suffering.

Together, Darin and Yung Pueblo explore why our thoughts don’t define us, how slowing down creates space between emotion and reaction, and why genuine healing requires the courage to confront what we’ve spent years avoiding.

They also discuss the hidden influence of childhood scarcity on adult decisions, the dangers of placing spiritual teachers on pedestals, and why authentic human connection may become increasingly valuable in a world dominated by artificial intelligence and digital distractions.

Throughout the conversation, Yung Pueblo offers practical tools anyone can use to cultivate greater inner peace: gratitude, embracing change, and intentionally slowing down.

At its heart, this episode is about recognizing that your past may have shaped your mind, but it doesn’t have to control your future.

You don’t need to escape your life to find peace. You can begin transforming it by changing how you respond to the experiences happening within it.
